On November 11 @ 6:30pm we will hold our second Acadiana Software Group meeting! We plan to have a presentation to discuss GIS concepts. In our world Geospatial data is becoming more and more prevalent to our society. Each data point can in some way or another relate to us in a physical location and provide more meaning to us spatially. Hopefully by learning more about GIS it can provide our community with more capabilities to present data and relate data to our world. Please join us in covering this topic!

Please forward this email to anyone you think might be interested in this!

Presentation

Overview and Discussion of GIS and Spatial Data

What is GIS and how does it give us perspectives on our data that non-spatial data cannot? This presentation will answer this question by introducing the GIS stack all the way from spatial data types in the database to standards based web maps that allow for interoperability with different systems. In this overview, we will utilize ESRI, SQL Server and JavaScript examples to illustrate GIS concepts, but will list and talk about some of the more popular comparable open source products. We will also discuss how to take non-spatial data and relate to spatial data to allow grouping and visualizing data in a completely new way.

We hope to discuss as a community how spatial data can help you re-imagine your data in different and unique ways to present to your stakeholders and clients.
